History
The Institute of Natural Sciences at Yıldız Technical University continues a strong tradition of technical education dating back to 1911. The technical education process, which began with the Kondüktör Mekteb-i Âlîsi—the foundation of the university—evolved over time, laying the groundwork for today’s graduate education structure.
Graduate education activities began in 1959 with the establishment of the “Specialization Department” within the Istanbul Technical School. This structure was created to enable more advanced education and research in engineering and technical fields, and it formed the foundation of the university’s graduate education tradition.
With Law No. 2809, which came into effect in 1982, Yıldız University was established, and the institutes within the university were restructured as an important part of the academic framework. With this reorganization, graduate education and research activities began to be conducted within a more systematic institutional structure.
Under Law No. 3837 dated July 3, 1992, the university’s name was changed to Yıldız Technical University. During this process, the Institute of Natural Sciences evolved into its current structure as an academic unit that offers master’s and doctoral programs in engineering, natural sciences, and architecture, supports scientific research, and coordinates. The Institute of Natural Sciences, which began its activities at the Çukursaray campus on the Beşiktaş Campus, has continued its operations at the Taşkışla Building on the Davutpaşa Campus since 2017.
Today, the Institute of Natural Sciences continues to serve as a major academic center contributing to scientific output through its graduate programs, research activities, and scientific events across various disciplines.
